US Expands Energy Storage Capacity by 20 GWh in Q2

Growth of Utility-Scale Energy Storage in 2026

In the first half of 2026, total energy storage installations rose to 30.8 GWh. Utility-scale capacity nearly doubled from 88 GWh to 165 GWh within the first 18 months of the Trump administration. This growth reflects a strong shift by grid operators, utilities, and energy buyers toward energy storage to enhance reliability and accommodate increasing electricity demand.

Forecast and Demand Surge

Demand for energy storage is exceeding predictions, leading to an 11.5% revision in the forecast to 683 GWh by 2030. Notably, over 10% of the U.S. energy storage capacity was installed in just Q2, marking a significant milestone for the industry.

Economic and Reliability Benefits

Tim Pawlenty, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association, emphasized that this growth demonstrates energy storage’s role as a vital tool for reliability, energy security, and lowering electricity costs.

Regional Highlights

In Q2, over 74% of new storage capacity originated from states won by Trump in 2024, mainly Arizona, Texas, and Utah. Arizona led with 6.2 GWh of new installations, highlighting its expanding solar capacity and strategic storage use to meet energy demands and control costs.

Broadening Landscape

Shan Tomouk, BESS & Energy Lead at Benchmark Minerals, noted that energy storage is spreading beyond just California and Texas into states like Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Colorado.

Performance Under Pressure

Furthermore, battery energy storage contributed more electricity to the grid in the first eight months of 2026 than all of 2025. During extreme heat waves in states such as Texas and California, storage has played a critical role in maintaining grid reliability and mitigating price spikes.
