Enhancing Capacity and Connectivity in Greater Montreal’s Aviation System

Macquarie Asset Management (MAM) has partnered with Porter Aviation Holdings Inc. (PAHI) to create the YHU Terminal, a commercial passenger terminal at Montreal Metropolitan Airport. This terminal aims to ease capacity issues and enhance connectivity in Canada, notably addressing the significant demand for air travel in the Greater Montreal area, which has seen passenger traffic grow at an annual rate of 3.3% over the past 30 years.

Montreal, with a population of 4.6 million, is facing challenges at its primary airport, Montréal-Trudeau International (YUL), which has reached its passenger capacity ahead of schedule—22 million passengers in 2024 instead of 2033. YHU, strategically located near downtown and well-equipped with existing infrastructure, provides an opportunity to expand capacity for commercial air travel.

PAHI has secured a long-term concession to develop and operate the terminal and sought MAM as a partner to leverage their expertise in critical infrastructure projects. This initiative not only aims to enhance economic connectivity but also to stimulate local economic activity during its construction and improve surrounding road infrastructure.

Together, MAM and PAHI have formed a joint venture—YHU Terminal—to finance, develop, and operate this new facility, supporting the growing aviation needs of the region.
