Major Investment in Red Sea Jeddah Islamic Port
An important agreement was signed in Paris during a French-Saudi Investment Roundtable between CMA CGM and the Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), Saudi Arabia’s terminal operator. This collaboration aims to significantly expand the Red Sea Jeddah Islamic Port, marking one of the largest foreign direct investments in the country’s maritime sector.
Project Details
The investment, amounting to approximately $434 million, will enhance the Jeddah Islamic Port by creating a new state-of-the-art container terminal. This development is set to boost the port’s current handling capacity of 6.2 million TEUs by an additional 2.6 million TEUs annually and will feature new deep-water berths tailored for the world’s largest container vessels. Advanced terminal technologies will also be implemented, along with the addition of 10 new ship-to-shore cranes.
Importance of the Jeddah Terminal
RSGT refers to its Jeddah operation as its flagship terminal, stating that it is the largest and most sophisticated container terminal on the Red Sea, contributing nearly 40% of Saudi Arabia’s container throughput.
Benefits of the Development
The expansion will enhance productivity, efficiency, and service reliability for customers across the Kingdom and the wider region. The improved marine infrastructure will bolster the port’s capability to serve larger vessels and major international shipping lines, facilitating increased trade and connectivity for Saudi imports and exports. This initiative is a testament to the successful collaboration among the Kingdom, the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), RSGT, and the CMA CGM Group.
Future Capacity and Global Connectivity
The project will address the Kingdom’s growing trade requirements and fortify the port’s position on vital global shipping routes. With the introduction of deep-water berths, the terminal will be better equipped to manage larger, next-generation container vessels, which will help attract significant shipping services, increase cargo flow, and enhance Saudi businesses’ access to global markets.
RSGT’s Role and Capabilities
As Saudi Arabia’s first privately funded terminal operator, RSGT has diversified its services to encompass Multi-Purpose Terminals (MPT), offering solutions for non-containerized cargo across four strategic locations along the Red Sea coast. This includes handling containers, Ro/Ro, general cargo, dry and liquid bulk, as well as livestock.
Challenges and Future Directions
The Red Sea ports are increasingly vital for Saudi Arabia, especially amidst disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and challenges from a blockade declared by the Houthis in Yemen. Nevertheless, the Kingdom remains resolute in its aim to enhance its trading capabilities as it seeks to solidify its status as a regional trade hub.
