Milwaukee alderman claims the Water Street entertainment district has a limited future.

Milwaukee’s Common Council voted to restore a 1 a.m. closing time for food trucks in the Water Street entertainment district, reversing an earlier 10 p.m. curfew challenged in court by a food truck owner. This decision aims to minimize legal disputes after the revised curfew was established in April for crowd control amid ongoing safety concerns, including crime and disorder in the area.

District Alder Bob Bauman expressed skepticism about the future of the entertainment district, describing it as a hub of “concentrated drinking and disorder.” He supported the food truck restrictions as a measure to control crowds, asserting that they attract large gatherings.

Conversely, residents like Nicole Parmenter and Chester Washington emphasized the area’s value to the community and the importance of retaining its vibrant scene while addressing safety issues. They argued for focusing on reducing violence rather than dismantling beloved local attractions.

As part of its broader safety initiatives, the city has also strengthened police presence and implemented barriers in the district. Resident Dhruv Weaver highlighted that reducing violence can coexist with maintaining the area’s appeal.

The matter is now pending a full council vote.
