UK supplement companies encounter new subscription regulations

The UK government, under Labour leader Andy Burnham, is initiating efforts to combat “subscription traps” amid rising cost-of-living challenges. These traps refer to practices that facilitate easy sign-ups for recurring subscriptions but make cancellations difficult for consumers. With billions spent annually on subscriptions, the aim is to enhance consumer protection and simplify cancellation processes.

Legislation addressing these issues began in 2021, with the introduction of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, which mandates clearer information regarding subscriptions, timely renewal reminders, and a straightforward cancellation process. These rules, expected to save consumers about £400 million yearly, will be implemented by January 2027.

Industry response has been generally positive, with many supplement brands advocating for transparency and easier management of subscriptions. Leaders from companies like Rheal Superfoods and Vitl expressed support for the measures, arguing that they align with consumer needs and foster trust, essential for subscription models.
