“I’ve found so much more to live for here”: Unable to retire in the US, she moved from California to Portugal.

This article highlights Paula Dreyfuss’s experience of moving from Texas to Porto, Portugal, five years ago, despite having never visited the country. Initially met with skepticism from friends, Dreyfuss has found her life richer and more fulfilling in Portugal. She enjoys the local culture, cuisine, and the friendship of residents, which contrasts sharply with her previous life in San Diego.

Dreyfuss, who previously worked as a teacher after a corporate finance career, felt the cost of living was unsustainable in the U.S. Despite contemplating relocation within the country, she realized she could fulfill her dream of exploring Europe by moving to Portugal instead. After extensive research, she applied for the Portugal D7 visa, which accommodates non-EU nationals with stable income.

Due to the pandemic, Dreyfuss faced delays but eventually moved in May 2021 with her dog. She initially found Lisbon too overwhelming and quickly fell in love with Porto’s beauty and welcoming atmosphere. Adjusting socially was easy; the warm nature of the locals helped her integrate and create friendships.

Dreyfuss appreciates the affordability of living in Porto, where she can enjoy dining out and traveling to nearby countries regularly. She feels safer there than in the U.S. and is pleased with the quality of healthcare. Although navigating the banking system and real estate has posed challenges, she successfully bought and sold property.

Culturally, she’s adapted to local customs and has enjoyed her travels across Europe. Dreyfuss is currently applying for Portuguese citizenship and envisions her future in Portugal, feeling a profound connection to her new home, though she does miss certain aspects of California, like Trader Joe’s. Ultimately, the peace and safety she finds in Portugal have made a significant positive impact on her life.
