Nvidia, led by CEO Jensen Huang, is reportedly negotiating a $3 billion investment in SB Energy, a SoftBank subsidiary, for a significant data center project in Ohio that supports OpenAI. The investment will be staggered: half upon project agreement, with the other half linked to SB Energy’s potential IPO next month, aiming to raise $5 billion.
This investment follows Nvidia’s discussions about providing $100 billion in credit for the data center, with adjustments made to the initial financial guarantee, reducing it from $250 billion to under $120 billion to mitigate risk. The project’s first phase aims to provide five gigawatts (GW) of power, while OpenAI is working on a lease for a total of 10 GW.
SB Energy is developing what could be the largest data center project announced, which would enhance infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads. Additionally, Nvidia is negotiating to finance OpenAI’s chip purchases, possibly totaling $350 billion. These discussions follow earlier delays in a partnership agreement signed last year.
