AquaNab, a Hamburg-based startup, has developed a groundbreaking nanoantibody treatment known as AquaNabs, aimed at addressing the persistent issue of sea lice in the aquaculture industry, which incurs annual losses of approximately $4 billion due to treatment costs and fish mortality. This innovative solution, delivered through fish feed, represents a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical and mechanical delousing methods, which raise environmental and animal welfare concerns.
The nanoantibodies, derived from alpacas, have been shown to effectively penetrate the fish’s intestinal barrier and enter its bloodstream, marking a significant advancement in protecting fish health and welfare. According to CEO Dr. Ruth, the goal is to provide aquaculture producers with effective tools to combat sea lice, reducing stress on fish while securing their businesses and contributing to sustainable food production.
Initially focused on Atlantic salmon, AquaNab’s technology is adaptable to tackle various diseases across multiple aquaculture species. The company has gained support from Nordic Foodtech VC, indicating confidence in its potential to revolutionize disease management in aquaculture.
