Eric Greenspan’s Mish Delicatessen modernizes the traditional Jewish deli experience.

Chef Eric Greenspan, known as “the grilled cheese guy” and founder of popular culinary spots like Maré, has launched Mish Delicatessen in the Fairfax District. This venture is deeply personal for him, aiming to honor Jewish deli traditions while modernizing classic recipes.

Greenspan spent two years perfecting pastrami, brisket, and turkey, infusing his dishes with rich flavors while experimenting with recipes, particularly for bagels. His menu includes items like smoked pastrami, latkes served with apple marmalade, and wood-fired bagels.

Mish is described as the most personal restaurant he has created, reflecting his heritage and family connections. After stepping back from the restaurant scene to focus on parenting, he re-entered the culinary world, targeting the deli concept.

Greenspan’s experience includes a controversial stint at the Tesla Diner, which generated negative backlash due to its association with CEO Elon Musk. Nonetheless, he returned to pursue Mish, diving deeply into research and reconnecting with his Jewish roots through food.

Decorated with natural light and community-focused dining spaces, Mish showcases a variety of drinks and dishes, including a unique approach to bagels flavored with spices reminiscent of his culinary inspirations. Greenspan’s journey emphasizes not just skill but his desire to reconnect with his cultural legacy and share it with his children through food.

Mish Delicatessen operates at 127 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
