Charlie Obaugh Auto Group donates inaugural private investment to JMU’s upcoming Madison District.

The Charlie Obaugh Auto Group of Staunton has pledged $500,000 to James Madison University (JMU) for the Madison District initiative, marking the first philanthropic partnership for this project aimed at revitalizing the campus. This donation includes a 10-year naming rights agreement for the Champions Parking Deck, which is located near Bridgeforth Stadium.

JMU President Jim Schmidt described the donation as a significant milestone for the university’s revitalization plans, expressing excitement about community investment in JMU’s future. The parking deck, established in 2001, was highlighted as a key redevelopment area to enhance student life and campus experiences.

Eric W. Obaugh, president of the auto group, emphasized the family’s long-standing connection to JMU, noting his own academic history at the university, as well as that of his family members. He hopes this gift will inspire further contributions from alumni and supporters.

The donation will create an expendable account with the JMU Foundation to support various university initiatives, aligning with the objectives outlined in JMU’s Madison Promise strategic plan, which emphasizes infrastructure investment and enhanced community engagement. The Charlie Obaugh Auto Group has been a family-run business since 1976, expanding significantly over the years.
