Pittsburgh Water is set to invest nearly $54 million in upgrading its aging sewer infrastructure through 2028. The initiative aims to preemptively address issues like sewer backups and sinkholes by rehabilitating aging lines. Starting in Hazelwood, the project will extend to various other neighborhoods, ensuring residents receive notifications ahead of construction.
The rehabilitation will predominantly utilize trenchless technology, minimizing excavation compared to traditional methods. This effort will assess and improve about 42 miles of local sewer lines and key sections of larger mains, enhancing the broader wastewater system’s reliability.
Pittsburgh Water CEO Will Pickering emphasized the goal of addressing potential problems before they affect customers, thereby prolonging infrastructure life and ensuring consistent wastewater service. This funding is supported by low-interest financing from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST).
