Millions Now Qualify for Free Bus Travel Beginning Today

Free Bus Travel for Children in England

Starting August 1, families across England can benefit from a government scheme providing free bus travel for children aged 5 to 15 throughout the month of August. This initiative aims to help families save on summer travel costs, with an estimated 7.5 million young people expected to take advantage of this offer.

Key Highlights:

  • Eligibility: No application is required; children can simply board participating local bus services to travel for free.
  • Duration: The scheme is active until August 31 but note that not every bus operator or route will qualify. Families should confirm with local providers.
  • Participating Networks: Notable bus networks in the North West, including Greater Manchester’s Bee Network and operators like Arriva Merseyside, Blackpool Transport, and others, are part of the scheme.
  • Exclusions: Long-distance services, tourist buses, and private hire vehicles are not included. Transport for London has separate arrangements already in place.

Government Support

The scheme aims to provide immediate relief to families facing rising costs. Former Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasized that the initiative is a direct response to help households enjoy their summer without financial strain.

Further Information

Adults will not receive free travel under this scheme, but the £3 cap on single bus fares across England remains through March of next year. Families are encouraged to enjoy the benefits of this scheme to ease the financial demands during the school holidays.
