Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, has decided to withdraw the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan aimed at introducing private investment into the World Cup. This decision comes after considerable backlash and protests from various football organizations and stakeholders.
The FFE initiative sought to allocate funds to FIFA member nations by allowing private investments in the World Cup, with reports indicating that Jason Kushner, brother-in-law of former President Trump’s adviser Jared Kushner, was linked to the investment group.
Infantino faced criticism not only from external entities but also from within FIFA. Carlos Cordeiro, a former US Soccer president and advisor, resigned, and current COO Kevin Lamour expressed feeling deceived by his leadership. The backlash intensified after UEFA declared its member nations would boycott all FIFA competitions, receiving support from other confederations.
In a statement, Infantino emphasized that the FFE was intended to strengthen FIFA member associations and was contingent on majority support. However, he acknowledged that the project had created divisions that detracted from its objectives. Moving forward, he aims to foster unity among parties interested in the sport and continue efforts to develop football, especially in under-supported countries.
