NEW JERSEY – Break the Bonds NJ and a broad coalition of justice-oriented organizations in New Jersey are urging the State Investment Council (SIC) of the Treasury Department’s Division of Investment to divest from Palantir, the technology firm that profits from assisting ICE in the persecution of immigrants and aiding Israel in its ongoing actions in Gaza. This call reflects a growing recognition of the link between these issues and a need for New Jersey’s state government to distance itself from both ICE’s actions and Israel’s military operations.

Dozens of New Jerseyans are expected to voice their concerns regarding Palantir and Israel bonds at the SIC’s quarterly meeting on July 29.

Mindy Greenspan of Jewish Voice for Peace stated, “Break the Bonds is a grassroots campaign committed to cutting New Jersey’s financial support for the genocide and Israeli apartheid of the Palestinian people. We began by targeting the loans provided to Israel through bonds, successfully reducing that amount by $5 million. Our ongoing goal is to compel the SIC to divest completely from Israel Bonds while advocating for stronger language in the Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) policy to ensure that NJ does not invest in entities that support human rights violations.”

Haliema Twam from the Palestinian American Community Center in Paterson emphasized, “New Jersey’s investment in Israel bonds is unethical, but its larger stake in Palantir is even more concerning. This firm manages surveillance systems that facilitate military actions against Palestinians in Gaza and Lebanon and have contributed to tragic incidents, such as the recent bombing in Iran. New Jersey has one of the largest Palestinian populations in the U.S.; it is unacceptable for them to indirectly fund harm to their families both here and abroad.”

Rachael Bane of the Green Party of New Jersey added, “Palantir is a key player in the U.S. carceral state, supplying ICE with tools to surveil and target immigrants. The brutal conditions in detention centers highlight the urgent need to redirect our funds back into our communities rather than towards entities that profit from suffering.”

Whitney Strub of North New Jersey Democratic Socialists of America mentioned, “The movements advocating for immigrant justice and against Israel’s actions share a fundamental connection. By divesting from Palantir, New Jersey can take a moral stand against oppression.”

Omayma Mansour of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) declared, “Our pension funds must not support systems that harm human rights or enable surveillance and brutality. Investment decisions should honor humanitarian principles over short-term financial gains.”

Wassim Kanaan, New Jersey chair of American Muslims for Palestine, concluded, “Investing in Palantir undermines our claims to justice and human rights. New Jersey must prioritize the well-being of its communities over systems of harm.”

Break the Bonds NJ invites all New Jersey residents to urge state officials to adopt ethical investment practices and divest from detrimental entities. Interested individuals can learn more at https://breakthebondsnj.org/.
