Bertha Vazquez, a retired middle school science teacher and Director of Education at the Center for Inquiry, reacted strongly to Florida’s proposed science standards, calling them deeply flawed. She warned that adopting these standards would represent a regression in science education. After analyzing the standards, she noted that while the underlying science remains intact, critical scientific vocabulary has been omitted, potentially leaving gaps in understanding.
Vazquez urged Floridians to comment on the proposed standards, despite the difficulty of the process. To assist, she created a step-by-step guide to help navigate the comment system and encouraged everyone to share their thoughts on evolution and climate change. She emphasized the importance of this effort, noting that it could take about 30 minutes but would be worthwhile for the future of science education in the state.
