New Roundabout Opens in Newberry, Florida
NEWBERRY, Fla. – A new $1.5 million roundabout has officially opened in Newberry, aimed at improving safety and enhancing traffic flow in this growing area. The intersection reopened on July 22, with funding shared between Alachua County and the City of Newberry as part of a 10-year Transportation Capital Improvement Program.
Project Highlights:
- Traffic Improvement: The roundabout was implemented following a traffic study to accommodate current and future traffic, including larger vehicles like semi-trucks.
- Mayor’s Insight: Newberry Mayor Tim Marden emphasized the intersection’s significance as a primary route between Newberry and Alachua, particularly noting its role in easing afternoon congestion.
- Safety Factors: County officials pointed out that roundabouts can reduce crash severity by slowing traffic while allowing for continuous movement at the intersection.
Previous Changes:
- Transformations: The intersection previously transitioned from a two-way to a four-way stop before the implementation of the roundabout. Stuart Cullen, a civic engineer with Alachua County Public Works, noted the evolution was to continue improving traffic flow.
Community Response:
Resident Ronald Ray expressed interest in how larger vehicles would navigate the new roundabout but noted that it appears sufficiently wide to accommodate them.
