This summer, families traveling by train can benefit from significant discounts, with some state-owned rail operators offering children’s tickets for just £1. This initiative is part of the government’s Great British Summer Savings campaign aimed at making holidays and day trips more affordable.
The highlights include:
- Southeastern: Children under 16 can travel for just £1 on off-peak services.
- c2c and Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR): Continuing the Kids for £2 promotion, allowing children to travel for £2 return on weekends and during school holidays.
- Greater Anglia: Selected £2 child tickets available.
- LNER and Northern: Discounted family tickets for up to two adults and four children, averaging 77% savings.
- West Midlands Trains: Offers travel between Birmingham and London for as little as £22.
Additionally, TransPennine Express is providing free “All Aboard” activity books for children and discounts at local attractions.
The government also announced wider transport discounts, including free bus travel for children in England outside London throughout August, and a £2 cap on single bus fares starting in January.
