New Travel Rules for Dogs on Renfe Trains in Spain
From July 21, 2026, Renfe will allow dogs weighing up to 40kg on most of its services, creating greater flexibility for pet owners traveling across Spain. This includes platforms such as AVE, Avlo, and Intercity.
Key Features of the New Policy:

Dedicated Pet-Carriages: Each train will have a specific area for pets, allowing two dogs (maximum weight 40kg each) per carriage.

Booking Procedure: Owners will book two adjacent seats—one for themselves (aisle seat) and one for the dog (window seat).

Health and Safety Requirements:
- Dogs must be on a non-extendable lead (max 1.5m) and muzzled in stations and while boarding and disembarking.
- Proof of up-to-date vaccinations or a European pet passport is required.

Cleaning Responsibility: Owners must carry a cleaning kit including absorbent pads, wipes, and waste bags.

Cost:
- €40 for AVE, Alvia, Intercity, Euromed, and Avlo trains.
- Standard fares on Avant and Media Distancia services.

Exclusions: Dogs under one year, certain dangerous breeds, and females in heat aren’t allowed.

Limited Availability: Only two spaces are allocated per service, so owners should book early.
