New IATA Guidelines for In-Cabin Pet Travel

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has introduced new operational guidelines aimed at improving the consistency of in-cabin pet travel across the entire passenger journey—spanning booking, check-in, boarding, the onboard experience, and arrival.
These guidelines build on previous initiatives, including guidance on traveling with service dogs, as part of IATA’s broader effort to enhance the air transport of animals.
Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, emphasized the importance of clarity for pet owners, stating, “A pet is a much-loved member of the family. People traveling with their pets need clear guidance on what to expect at every step of the journey. Well-prepared travelers and industry-wide best practices enable airlines to deliver a safe, consistent, and efficient experience for those traveling with their pets.”
A recent survey by IATA revealed that about 25% of respondents have either traveled or are open to traveling with a pet. Nonetheless, challenges persist, with 41% of participants unsure about pet eligibility, 36% unclear on airline policies, and 34% uncertain about the overall travel process.
To address these concerns, IATA’s new Operational Guidelines for In-Cabin Pet Transport offers recommended procedures that aim to ensure a predictable travel experience while prioritizing safety, animal welfare, and operational efficiency.
