Beyond Seoul: Local Areas Harness K-Culture to Draw Tourists

South Korea is enhancing its commercial districts into vibrant tourism hubs that showcase local culture and K-culture, aiming to attract international visitors beyond Seoul and invigorate local economies. This initiative, spearheaded by the Small Enterprise and Market Service, will invest up to 5 billion won ($3.6 million) in about six districts outside the capital by the end of 2027.

Key focuses include:

  • Cultural Tourism Development: Tailoring tourism offerings to reflect regional identities.
  • Visitor Services: Implementing multilingual guides, mobile payment options, and tax-refund services.
  • Infrastructure Enhancements: Creating pedestrian-friendly zones and adding photo spots.
  • Experiential Programs: Linking local businesses through interconnected experiences, such as workshops and food sampling.

Featured Districts:

  1. Gyodong, Daegu:

    • A 160,000 square meter area with 863 stores offering crafts, jewelry, and food.
    • Plans include improved infrastructure for international guests and experiential programs connecting various businesses.
  2. Dongmyeong, Gwangju:

    • A 628,000 square meter district with a focus on local brands and cultural events.
    • It will foster connections among businesses and promote tourism packages tailored to specific international markets.
  3. Seogwipo, Jeju:

    • This shopping district bridges old downtown with cultural attractions, offering food, shopping, and scenic views.
    • Plans include K-content experiences and infrastructure for international visitors, aiming to transform the area into a destination for immersive local experiences.

The overall strategy emphasizes not just economic revival but also enhanced cultural engagement for both domestic and international travelers.
