According to a leasing brochure, Bungie is advertising its expansive space as a “turn-key” production facility, complete with office amenities, a gym with a rock climbing wall, catering options, and a motion-capture studio. While Bungie confirmed the search for subletters, they stated they would maintain some physical office presence as they explore a digital-first model.
The shift towards remote work began during the COVID-19 pandemic and was formalized in 2022. Many companies, including Bungie, faced challenges due to rapid hires and ambitious expansions made during the pandemic, leading to subsequent cost-cutting measures and layoffs. Bungie experienced a series of layoffs in 2023 and 2024, cutting significant portions of its staff, ultimately leading to underemployment of its office space.
In recent years, Bungie’s situation has reflected broader trends in the gaming industry, with high financial stakes leading to overextensions. Following its acquisition by Sony for $3.6 billion in 2022, Bungie’s leadership’s focus on rapid growth ran into financial difficulties, culminating in substantial job cuts. As of now, the master lease for Bungie’s headquarters lasts until September 30, 2035, indicating a long-term commitment to the space, even as the company restructures.
