The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF Is Thriving, Yet This One Investment Might Offer More Stability at This Time

Investing in the S&P 500 has provided strong returns over the past decade, averaging around 15% annually without the need for stock picking. However, the index has become increasingly concentrated, particularly in tech stocks, which now represent about 40% of the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO). This high concentration raises concerns about potential vulnerabilities should tech stocks experience a downturn.

To mitigate these risks, investors may consider an equal-weight strategy, such as the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP). This ETF offers the same U.S. large-cap equity exposure while providing a more diversified allocation among sectors. Currently, its top sectors include industrials, tech, and financials, among others, ensuring a balanced mix that reduces idiosyncratic risk and share price volatility.

In the current economic landscape of strong S&P 500 earnings growth alongside high inflation and consumer sentiment challenges, an equal-weight approach could be a prudent option for investors looking to diversify their tech-heavy portfolios while maintaining U.S. equity exposure.
