Durango Botanic Gardens Unveils New Community Event Space

The Durango Botanic Gardens has opened a new Community Venue Garden, which features a stage for live performances, three plant beds, and a viewing lawn. This venue can be booked through the library reservation system and aims to provide an outdoor space for various gatherings and events.

During a recent dedication ceremony, Bill LeMaire, board president of the Botanic Gardens, emphasized the garden as a gift to the community, aiming to inspire and educate. The ceremony included a performance by local Celtic band Tom Ward’s Downfall, marking the first event on the new stage.

The project faced delays due to issues with grass regrowth and electrical requirements, but it ultimately met its goal of enhancing the garden’s presence. The venue cost $250,000, with funds primarily allocated to the stage and electrical facilities.

Mayor Dave Woodruff highlighted the venue’s significance, pointing to its role in fostering community interactions and celebrations. Library director Luke Alvey-Henderson also underscored the importance of accessible public spaces, where people can freely enjoy art and nature. Overall, the venue is intended to serve as a versatile space for community engagement and activities.
