New Life Church Junior Bible Quizzing Team Aims for Nationals
A group of dedicated youngsters from New Life Church in Marshalltown are working diligently to raise funds for their upcoming participation in the North American Junior Bible Quizzing Tournament (NAJBQT) in Branson, Missouri, scheduled for July 18-23. The team, made up of Ella Reed, Urijah Romero, Averly Romero, Javier Gomez, and Makenna Reed, has been practicing and competing since October under the guidance of their coach, Gloria Casillas.
Fundraising Efforts
To fund their trip, the team has been involved in various fundraising activities, including a tip night at Culver’s and a presence at the downtown farmer’s market. They plan to hold a pancake breakfast and sell lemon shake-ups this Saturday with the aim of raising $5,000.
“Since we didn’t have a team for several years, Michelle Reed suggested we reassemble one, and it took off from there,” Casillas explained. Initially, the kids learned five scriptures each week, developing different strategies for memorization.
Success in Competitions
The team has participated in monthly competitions since January, often securing first place. The members are enthusiastic about the challenge of memorizing scriptures, with young Javier, soon entering second grade, expressing excitement about learning verses and the adventures of traveling to various locations.
Growing Faith and Community
Michelle Reed emphasized the deeper significance of Bible quizzing, describing it as one of the toughest sports, where kids memorize 120 to 160 scriptures. “Every scripture they memorize brings them closer to the Lord, teaching them about Jesus and strengthening their faith,” she said.
The competition consists of various questions posed by moderators based on the memorized scriptures, and making it to nationals has been their long-term goal. In addition to competitions, the kids anticipate enjoying Branson attractions like the Dixie Stampede.
