With an influx of visitors bringing pets to the Oregon coast, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the importance of keeping animals safe on the road.
Key Safety Tips
-
Secure Transport: Dogs riding in the open bed of pickups pose significant risks. Oregon law mandates that dogs must be secured in a carrier or with a short leash to prevent falls.
-
In-Vehicle Restraints: Pets on a driver’s lap can distract the driver, increasing the risk of accidents. Pet-specific restraints are readily available.
-
Emergency Preparedness: Travelers should pack extra food and water for delays or severe weather and ensure pets wear secure collars with up-to-date ID tags.
The sheriff’s office stresses the need for responsible pet ownership, stating, “Our pets love to be on the go with us. Show them how much you care by always considering their safety when you take them on the road.”
Visual Caution: Pets should be monitored around cliff areas and drop-offs, as seen in a recent incident where a dog was rescued after falling into rough waters.
