New Screwworm Clearance Certificate Required for Pets Entering U.S.
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – A new screwworm clearance certificate is now necessary for bringing dogs and cats back into the United States from Mexico.
In addition to the standard CDC form that certifies rabies vaccinations and microchip information, pet owners must obtain this new document before re-entering the U.S. Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez from Laredo Pet Vet mentioned that the clearance must be obtained within five days of returning.
Requirements for the Document
This clearance document is newly implemented and doesn’t have a specific template. A government-accredited veterinarian must conduct an examination of the pet and endorse the certificate.
Dr. Rodriguez explained that “there should be a list of veterinarians that will be accredited” for this purpose. The examination should confirm that the pet has no wounds, infections, or signs of screwworm.
Screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae burrow into living tissue, and recent cases have been detected in Nuevo Laredo, directly across the border. According to the USDA, there are currently 27 confirmed cases of screwworm in the U.S., with 20 active cases.
Guidance for Pet Owners
State Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Texas, advises pet owners to verify the required documents ahead of time to facilitate smooth travel with animals. She emphasizes the importance of monitoring and reporting any suspected cases.
Zaffirini urges, “If anyone says don’t report it… tell that person not to be so irresponsible. Responsibility means monitoring, preventing, and reporting.” She also recommends that property owners remove anything that could potentially injure an animal to reduce the risk of screwworm infestation.
Pet owners traveling to Mexico this holiday weekend are encouraged to consult a government-accredited veterinarian before their trip and ensure they have the necessary screwworm clearance certificate for their return to the U.S.
