Chinese Celebrity Dog Abducted, Sold for $27 and Consumed; Owner Files Lawsuit but Faces Challenges Due to Insufficient Pet Regulations

In central China, a beloved celebrity dog named Chutou, owned by travel influencer Guo, was stolen and slaughtered, prompting outcry over the country’s inadequate legal protections for pets. Chutou, an eight-year-old Border Collie known for his intelligence and gentle nature, had gained over 1.5 million followers on social media after accompanying Guo on various adventures across China.

Guo adopted Chutou in 2018, purchasing him from a street vendor for over 2,000 yuan (approximately $300) when he was just three months old. Sadly, while Guo was on a solo trip in Georgia, Chutou was left at home with Guo’s parents. On May 11, Guo’s father found Chutou missing, and surveillance footage revealed two individuals taking him away on an electric bike. The incident has highlighted significant gaps in pet protection laws in China.
