Acura to Pause Production of MDX Type S After 2026
Sporty SUVs continue to be popular, but the performance-oriented Acura MDX Type S will pause production after the 2026 model year. This decision comes in light of new EPA emissions regulations, according to a report from Automotive News.
Reasons Behind the Decision
The discontinuation of the MDX Type S follows Acura’s earlier choice to eliminate the manual transmission option from the Integra lineup for the 2027 model year. Both decisions are largely influenced by the stringent emissions regulations set by the EPA.
Unique Engine Specs
The MDX Type S features a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, unique to this model, producing 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.

Availability and Future Features
Despite the pause in production, Acura has enough inventory to meet demand until early 2027. To compensate for the absence of the Type S trim, Acura plans to incorporate some of its features into other MDX models, though specifics have yet to be disclosed.
Emissions Regulations Impact
The stricter EPA Tier 4 criteria pollutant standards, finalized in 2024, have compelled Acura to make these adjustments. While proposals to delay these standards until the 2029 model year have been made, Acura is moving forward without waiting for a final decision.
With the MDX Type S’s suspension, Acura’s lineup of sporty vehicles is diminishing, having previously discontinued the TLX Type S, leaving the Integra Type S as the sole Type S offering.
