Free Tram Travel for School Kids in Greater Manchester
Starting today, around 90,000 school children in Greater Manchester can travel for free on Bee Network trams to participate in educational school trips. This initiative is organized by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and backed by Aviva, aiming to enhance access to the region’s cultural sites including theatres, museums, and galleries.
Key Points:
-
Reduced School Visits: Cultural visits by schools in Greater Manchester are currently about 20% lower than pre-COVID levels due to financial constraints. Only around 117,000 school visits were recorded in the 2023/24 period.
-
Mayor’s Statement: Bev Craig, the mayor, emphasized that travel costs shouldn’t hinder educational opportunities. This partnership would allow many young people to access enriching experiences in the area.
-
Previous Cost Model: Under the earlier system, schools paid £1 for each child and £2 for each adult accompanying the trip, but the new scheme offers complete free travel.
-
Eligibility: Groups of ten or more are eligible for free travel, which is available on weekdays after 9:30 AM and all day on weekends.
-
Implementation: The new program was inaugurated at Aviva Studios on September 11 and will continue for 12 months.
-
Educational Benefits: Educators like Alex Reed believe this initiative is significant for removing barriers and enhancing educational experiences, allowing children to explore various activities that foster confidence and curiosity.
-
Community Response: Local MP Jeff Smith expressed that every child should have equal access to cultural learning experiences, stating that free tram travel will eliminate transportation barriers to cultural venues.
This initiative promises to significantly expand educational experiences for the youth in Greater Manchester, ensuring they can engage with their community’s rich cultural resources.
