Two brothers, Ang Ngoh Tee (71) and Ang Chai Heng (63), were sentenced to five to six months in jail on September 17 for income tax and GST evasion and money laundering. They were also fined $812,795 each.
Their automotive company, William’s Auto, issued cash sales invoices without charging GST despite being GST-registered. From 2013 to 2019, they deposited cash sales into a personal bank account to evade taxes, leading to $219,978 in undercharged income tax and $50,953 in undercharged GST. The brothers received significant cash amounts from this account and used them to part-pay for car purchases, which constituted money laundering.
Tax evasion is a serious offence; penalties include heavy fines and imprisonment. Those wishing to rectify past tax mistakes or report tax evasion can visit the IRAS website for guidance. Informants may receive rewards for information leading to recovered taxes.
