Rapper Young Thug, born Jeffery Lamar Williams, was released from jail after pleading guilty to gang involvement as well as drug and gun charges. He was one of 28 alleged gang members indicted in May 2022, accused of leading YSL (Young Slime Life), associated with the Bloods gang, and facing charges related to serious crimes including murder and drug dealing.
In a surprising turn of events, he pleaded no contest to racketeering and gang leadership charges but guilty to six other counts, including firearm and drug offenses. He received a sentence of time served along with 15 years of probation.
Prosecutors claimed his record label was a front for criminal activities, citing lyrics from his song “Take It To Trial” as evidence. Conversely, the defense argued that YSL represented a music label rather than a gang, emphasizing that rap lyrics should not be used as evidence in such cases, alleging bias toward the rap genre. Young Thug is considered a key figure in contemporary hip-hop and the Atlanta music scene.
