Business leaders push back against demands for increased oil and gas drilling in the North Sea.

A recent survey indicates that a majority of British business leaders support the UK government’s efforts to phase out fossil fuels. Conducted among 1,350 leading entrepreneurs, the survey shows that 55% back the government’s current stance, with 62% believing that ending reliance on fossil fuels would either benefit their businesses or have no negative effect.

Despite ongoing support from the Conservative Party for North Sea energy developments, many business leaders, including those from campaign groups, argue that reliance on fossil fuels leads to higher energy costs for both commercial entities and households. Tessa Khan, executive director of Uplift, pointed out that leaders desire a clean energy system that reduces costs and fosters economic growth. She emphasized the need for clear government signals to forego new drilling in favor of a renewable energy shift.

James Alexander from the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association noted the financial sense of breaking away from fossil fuels, as dependency can expose companies to volatile price shocks. He called for policies that support clean energy investments to protect UK firms from such fluctuations.

Rachel Solomon Williams from the Aldersgate Group echoed the need for stable policies that encourage investment in clean electricity. She warned that continuing to rely on fossil fuels leaves UK businesses vulnerable to international market volatility.

In conclusion, the consensus among business leaders is clear: they favor a transition towards clean energy for financial stability and long-term economic growth, highlighting the urgency for government action in this direction.
