Rescuers Find 5 of 7 Trapped in Flooded Cave in Laos After WeekRescuers Find 5 of 7 Trapped in Flooded Cave in Laos After Week

Bangkok — In a remarkable turn of events, five villagers who had been trapped for over a week in a flooded cave in central Laos have been rescued, though two remain missing. Rescuers reported the news on Wednesday, giving hope amidst the ongoing search efforts.

Rescue Operation Overview

The villagers ventured into a cave located in Xaisomboun province on May 19. Unfortunately, intense rainfall led to flash flooding, which obstructed their exit and trapped seven individuals inside, as confirmed by rescue teams from Laos and Thailand.

A recent video shared by a Thai rescue group involved in the mission captured the critical moment when divers emerged from the waters to locate the trapped villagers. The footage depicted villagers, each equipped with a headlamp, sitting on a rock surrounded by rising floodwaters.

Leading diver Mikko Paasi communicated with CBS News’s chief correspondent Matt Gutman from within the cave on Wednesday. He expressed their intent to continue searching for the two missing villagers, stating that the immediate priority was to supply food and water to the five survivors. While he noted the villagers appeared disoriented, they were in stable condition.

Additional videos revealed rescuers celebrating both inside and outside the cave after locating the villagers, expressing joy with cheers and embraces.

Paasi indicated that the optimal solution would be to pump water out of the cave, enabling those trapped to walk out freely. However, concerns have been raised about potential carbon dioxide buildup in the small chamber where the five survivors were found, raising doubts about their strength for the arduous journey back.

Paasi, along with the divers currently engaged in this rescue effort, was also involved in the complex 2018 rescue in northern Thailand where 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach were safely extracted after being trapped for over two weeks.

The cave sits in a challenging and isolated area of Xaisomboun province’s Longcheng district, approximately 75 miles north of Vientiane, the capital. Rescuers have shared details on social media about the harsh mountainous conditions and heavy rains that have impeded their rescue efforts.

Thai rescue teams documented that reaching the cave entrance requires a steep 2.5-mile hike on foot, with a narrow, steep, and rocky entrance that permits only one person to pass at a time. The muddy pit located in the dense jungle, far from road access, has become the center of the rescue operations.

While the reason for the villagers’ entry into the cave remains unofficial, Bounkham Luanglath from the Lao organization Rescue Volunteer for People noted that locals often look for gold within the cave. However, authorities have previously warned against such activities due to safety hazards.
