International Relations
China?
I find myself bemused by some of the reactions to the Trump-Xi summit. There was no groundwork laid, as Trump tends to bypass such formalities. Consequently, minimal concrete agreements emerged from the discussion. Trump undermined any chance of securing concessions from China by implementing sanctions shortly before the summit. The prospect of gaining military support from Xi to secure the Strait of Hormuz was dashed, as China was unwilling to provide any. Negotiations seem futile due to uncompromising U.S. demands.
In essence, this summit served as a diversion from the ongoing situation in Iran. A future meeting is scheduled for September in Washington.
As one informed contact remarked:
Trump’s key concession was lifting restrictions on Nvidia’s H100 chips, which he had previously imposed. However, China showed little interest, claiming their own Huawei chips surpassed Nvidia’s in capability.
Trump’s dealings yielded minimal returns. The anticipated Boeing and soybean purchases fell short of expectations.
Overall, Xi outmaneuvered Trump at this summit.
President Xi giving Trump rose seeds after Trump and Melania destroyed the White House rose garden is incredibly petty and I love it.

Day 2 of the Trump-Xi summit is over. There are no updates thus far, but Trump spoke on Air Force One and the MFA just published Wang Yi’s brief.
Both are revealing.
This was a summit that focused heavily on symbolism rather than substance. The aim was to manage issues rather than resolve them.
