The impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on the software engineering industry is being thoroughly examined in recent research published in Contemporary Economic Policy. Surprisingly, the findings suggest that tools like GitHub Copilot may create more job opportunities rather than reduce them.
Through an analysis of data from LinkedIn and GitHub, researchers discovered that companies implementing GitHub Copilot are likely to boost their hiring of software engineers. Notably, new employees are entering with a broader set of non-programming skills while maintaining their coding abilities. Specifically, the adoption of these tools correlated with a 3-5% increase in the monthly probability of hiring software engineering professionals, especially among entry-level candidates. Furthermore, new hires were observed to possess approximately 5% more non-programming skills, without any decline in their coding capability.
Matthew Baird, PhD, from LinkedIn and the study’s lead author, remarked, “Our data suggest generative AI is expanding opportunities in the software workforce. Firms adopting these tools are hiring more engineers, particularly early career talent, and valuing a broader mix of skills—all without sacrificing core technical ability. AI isn’t narrowing the talent pool; it’s widening it.”
