Car Bomb Attack in Northwest Pakistan Claims Lives of 12 Police Officers

A devastating car bombing targeting a police post in Bannu, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 12 officers. The attack, followed by a fierce firefight, occurred late Saturday and is attributed to an alliance of armed groups operating in the region.

The Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, a coalition of militant organizations, has claimed responsibility for this assault.

According to police official Zahid Khan, a suicide bomber and a group of fighters detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near the security post. The blast triggered multiple explosions, leading to the collapse of the post.

Images captured post-attack reveal a scene of devastation, with the police post reduced to rubble and debris scattered throughout the area.

As reported by Reuters, after the bombing, police personnel rushing to the site for support fell victim to an ambush from armed attackers.

A police source, speaking under the condition of anonymity, revealed that the attackers first drove an explosive-laden vehicle into the post before entering and opening fire on officers.

“Support from other law enforcement agencies was dispatched, but unfortunately, they too were caught in an ambush, resulting in additional casualties,” the source stated.

Reports indicate that the attackers employed drones during the assault.

Police official Sajjad Khan expressed concern that the number of casualties could rise, adding that fighting remained ongoing and a complete assessment of the damage would only be possible after the operation concluded.

According to Pakistan’s Dawn, nearby civilian areas were significantly affected by the blasts, with at least two civilians reported injured.

Ambulances from rescue services and civil hospitals were quickly deployed, and a state of emergency has been declared in government hospitals in Bannu.

Attacks may reignite fighting along Afghan border

The recent surge in violence marks the most significant fighting seen in years, stemming from hostilities that began in February, when Pakistani airstrikes targeted suspected militants’ strongholds across the border in Afghanistan.

While tensions have fluctuated, with only sporadic clashes occurring since then, no official ceasefire has been established.

Islamabad accuses the Kabul government of harboring militant groups that utilize Afghan territory to orchestrate attacks in Pakistan. In contrast, the Taliban has refuted these claims, labeling the violence in Pakistan as an internal issue.

In the past, the Pakistan Taliban, or Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, alongside allied militant groups, has executed corresponding attacks. Although different entities, the Pakistan Taliban and the Taliban in Afghanistan, which regained control in 2021, share ideological commonalities.
