SkellaFit Teams Up with Alpena Senior Center for Fitness Programs

In Alpena, Michigan, a new initiative aims to empower older adults through structured fitness programs tailored to their needs.

Tailored Fitness for Seniors

In May, SkellaFit Personal Training officially began leading exercise programming at the Alpena Senior Citizen’s Center. This partnership introduces free weekly fitness classes specifically designed for individuals aged 60 and older. The primary focus is on improving strength, balance, and core stability to help seniors maintain their independence while reducing the risk of falls.

The program kicks off with the “Spring into Movement” theme, urging seniors to be more active as the weather warms up and community activities increase.

Class Offerings

Classes will include Functional Strength and Balance on Mondays and Fridays, as well as Chair Yoga every Wednesday. Certified instructors—including Stacie Nielsen, Punky Simpson, Andrew Kottra, and SkellaFit owner Cristi Johnson—will provide guidance throughout the sessions.

“Our goal is to encourage more adults over the age of 60 to become active by 2026,” Johnson commented. “Working with such a vibrant group at the Senior Citizen’s Center feels like a dream come true.”

Focus on Functional Fitness

The classes are free or available by donation, emphasizing functional fitness instead of high-intensity workouts. This approach prioritizes mobility, posture, balance, and strength, allowing participants to exercise safely while building confidence. The SkellaFit team has designed the program to accommodate varying ability levels, ensuring that everyone feels included and supported.

This shift towards functional fitness reflects a national trend that prioritizes practical movement skills, which are crucial for daily activities, over traditional gym-style workouts.

Expanding Community Wellness

Beyond its collaboration with the senior center, SkellaFit is dedicated to expanding community wellness throughout Alpena. The studio offers a free weekly exercise program tailored for individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers every Thursday at 11 a.m. at Alpena First United Methodist Church.

Additionally, SkellaFit provides private and semi-private Strength at Any Age training for adults aged 55 and older, alongside various small-group fitness and personal training programs. These offerings aim to keep community members engaged and active regardless of their stage in life.
