Google Photos Launches AI Tool to Visualize Outfits

Last night, as I was browsing through numerous Pinterest boards and online stores searching for the perfect dress for my best friend’s engagement party, I found myself overwhelmed. After some relentless scrolling, I decided it might be best to wear something I already own. I opened my Photos app and began sifting through past formal outfits for inspiration.

If you frequently find yourself in similar situations (I certainly do at least once a week), consider checking out a new AI feature from Google Photos. This tool helps organize your clothing by cataloging items you’ve worn in your stored photos, effectively creating a digital wardrobe for you. This allows you to mix and match and virtually try on outfits.

The Google Photos wardrobe feature is set to roll out this summer, starting with Android before making its way to iOS.

How Google’s AI-Driven Wardrobe Feature Works

The wardrobe feature utilizes AI to analyze photos from your camera roll, creating a digital closet based on outfits you’ve previously worn. With your collection saved, you can filter items by categories such as “jewelry” or “tops,” making it easy to locate a specific piece.

Google has also integrated a Pinterest-like element, allowing you to create digital mood boards. Instead of rummaging through your closet and modeling multiple outfits for friends to choose from, you can use this feature to combine items and generate outfit ideas, which can be saved to a shareable mood board. You can even organize these boards by various categories or occasions, like “wedding guest” or “work outfits.”

Additionally, the wardrobe feature enables you to virtually “try on” clothes, effectively saving you time during the dressing process. You can select clothing items from your collection and click “Try it on” to get a visual preview of how they might look on you. Keep in mind, though, that the AI does not fully comprehend clothing sizes or cuts, so the fit is merely a rough estimate.

Last year, Google introduced an AI-powered try-on feature in its Search function, which was designed for clothing you did not already own. This technology employs an AI image generation model like Nano Banana to give you a glimpse of what you might look like in those items. Google has also assured users that it won’t use uploaded images from the try-on feature for AI training or for any other Google services, nor will it sell them to third parties.

CNET’s Abrar Al-Heeti tested the Search try-on feature and noted that it could indeed generate images showcasing bare arms in a sleeveless dress. A similar feature available on the Samsung Galaxy S26 and Google’s Pixel phones, known as “Find the Look,” integrates this capability into Circle to Search. This means you can take a screenshot or photo and see how you might look in that outfit.

In summary, Google’s innovative wardrobe feature promises to simplify the way we choose clothing by combining the functionality of a digital closet with the creativity of virtual styling. With the ability to organize outfits and try them on virtually, it opens new avenues for expressing personal style and streamlining the dressing experience.
