Stephen F. Austin State University Students Explore Business and Culture in Latvia
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Ten students from Stephen F. Austin State University recently concluded their summer “Discovering Business” course with a study abroad trip to Latvia from July 22 to August 2. This course, now in its fourth year, aims to introduce both first-year and current students from all disciplines to fundamental business concepts while facilitating connections among peers and faculty prior to the fall semester.
Rebecca Oyeniyi, a finance sophomore from Houston, shared her enthusiasm about the trip, noting, “I decided to take the course because I’d never done anything like it before. The trip exceeded my expectations; it was immersive and truly felt like I was in a different world.”
In Latvia, the students toured Riga, experiencing its historical sites such as Old Town, the Dome Cathedral, and the Art Nouveau district. They also delved into Baltic history in Bauska, examining medieval castle ruins. The medieval theme continued with visits to Turaida and Cēsis castles and a Soviet-era bunker in Līgatne.
Nature excursions included Ķemeri National Park, the Baltic Sea coast, and stunning views of the Gauja Valley. The students explored unique local businesses, touring companies like Avenie, Silver Standard Houses, the Laima Chocolate Factory, and Erenpreiss bicycle manufacturing.
Oyeniyi remarked on her favorite visit to Silver Standard Houses, where she gained insights into construction differences between American and European homes.
Faculty members believe the relationships forged during the trip will enhance students’ success at SFA. Dr. Drew Thornley, co-teacher of the course, expressed hope that the friendships will deepen throughout their academic careers at SFA.
Looking ahead, the next “Discovering Business” course will feature a business exploration in Greece from January 5 to 15. For more information on this opportunity, interested participants can contact Dr. Robert McDermand at mcdermanrd@sfasu.edu.
