Army Introduces Gender-Neutral Combat Fitness Test

The U.S. Army Unveils a New Gender-Neutral Combat Fitness Test

The U.S. Army is set to implement a new gender-neutral combat fitness test aimed at soldiers in select frontline roles. This initiative, backed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, is part of a larger initiative to enhance military standards and reinforce the essence of the “warrior ethos.”

Overview of the New Combat Fitness Test

This rigorous Combat Field Test will specifically apply to essential combat specialties such as infantry, armor, engineers, and special forces. The Army has emphasized that the test will maintain uniform standards for all soldiers, regardless of gender, in alignment with Executive Order 14168, which seeks to address and clarify distinctions based on biological truth.

In a forward-looking speech to military leaders in Virginia, Hegseth outlined his vision for future military fitness standards. His remarks made it clear that the goal is not to restrict women’s participation but to ensure that all soldiers meet challenging criteria. He stated, “If no women qualify for certain combat roles under the enhanced gender-neutral standards, so be it.”

Test Components

The fitness test consists of seven demanding events that must be completed in 30 minutes or less, including:

  • Two one-mile runs
  • 30 dead-stop push-ups
  • A 100-meter sprint
  • Sandbag lifts
  • Weighted carries
  • Various movement drills

Soldiers will undergo diagnostic testing starting in 2026, with full implementation and potential administrative consequences for failing the test anticipated to begin in April 2027.

Conclusion

The introduction of a gender-neutral combat fitness test reflects the Army’s commitment to ensuring that all soldiers meet the same high standards regardless of gender. This shift not only aims to reinforce the effectiveness and readiness of military personnel but also embodies the evolving nature of fitness and inclusivity within service roles. As the Army prepares for these changes, it offers a significant opportunity for all soldiers to challenge themselves and enhance their physical capabilities, ultimately contributing to a more robust and prepared military force.
