Amputee Fun Fest 2023 Celebrates Community in Parkersburg

Embracing Fitness and Community: Insights from the Amputee Center’s Fun Fest

In an inspiring celebration of resilience and community, the Amputee Center’s third annual Fun Fest brought together individuals from across the country, including a participant who traveled all the way from Canada. This event showcases the strength and spirit of amputees while encouraging fitness and connection.

A Unique Celebration of Strength

This year’s Fun Fest featured an array of activities, including a lively 5K fun run and adaptive fitness demonstrations designed to inspire and inform. The keynote speaker, Gary Weiland, a four-time competitor on Ninja Warrior, shared his remarkable journey of overcoming challenges since losing his leg. Initially, Weiland applied to be on Ninja Warrior before his amputation. His story gained attention post-amputation, demonstrating how adversity can lead to new opportunities.

“It’s important to keep moving forward,” Weiland emphasized during his speech, underscoring that everyone faces different struggles in life. His participation in the morning’s 5K reaffirmed his commitment to living life to the fullest, despite obstacles.

Building Community Connections

Marley Jouver, a paid intern and amputee who has been part of Fun Fest since its inception, expressed her excitement at connecting with others who share similar experiences. After losing her leg in a lawnmower accident, Jouver found solace in the Amputee Center, where she felt understood and supported.

She encouraged first-time attendees to delve into the community, suggesting they visit the center’s open Thursdays. “It’s all about finding connections that can turn into lasting friendships,” she noted. Even meeting just one person who understands your journey can make a significant difference.

Support and Resources for Amputees

The Amputee Center isn’t just about celebration; it plays a vital role in providing resources. It offers free physical therapy clinics three times a week and organizes outings for amputees to engage in recreational activities, such as concerts and trips to the lake. Executive Director Catherine Bigley highlighted the dual purpose of the Fun Fest—promoting fitness and serving as a fundraiser to support these valuable programs.

For those contemplating amputation, the center also conducts pre-amputation consultations, offering essential support during challenging times.

Conclusion: Moving Forward Together

The Fun Fest exemplifies the power of community and the incredible resilience of those facing physical challenges. As the event wrapped up with a concert by the Division Street Band, it became clear that life after limb loss can be vibrant and fulfilling. Through fitness, friendship, and shared experiences, participants were reminded that they do not have to face their journeys alone. Embrace the support around you and remember, life is far from over; in fact, it’s just beginning.

Whether you’re an amputee or simply interested in enhancing your fitness journey, connecting with supportive communities like the Amputee Center can empower you to reach new heights.
