Nutritionist’s Daily Breakfast: The Easiest Healthy Eating Habit

If you tend to be a creature of habit like I am and often find yourself sticking to the same breakfast each morning, there’s comforting news for you.

Nutritionist Dr. Hazel Wallace suggests that eating the same breakfast daily may actually simplify your journey towards healthy eating.

In a recent Instagram reel, Wallace revealed that she has had overnight oats every single day for the past six years and would be ‘happy to continue for another six’.

Overnight oats are not just convenient; they are versatile as well. “They travel well, stay fresh, and enable you to maintain a healthy diet even on the busiest days,” she explains. Plus, they are nutritious, offering a fiber-rich, high-protein, and energy-sustaining breakfast.

Wallace adds that overnight oats are ‘among the most reliable, prep-ahead breakfasts you can create’.

Rather than repeating the same bowl, she experiments with different flavors to keep her meals exciting. Some of her favorites include carrot cake, tiramisu, and apple crumble.

Overnight Oats Recipe by Dr. Hazel Wallace

Base (serves 1):

Carrot Cake

Incorporate ½ grated carrot, 3 chopped walnuts, 1 chopped date (or raisins), and ½ tsp cinnamon into the base ingredients.

Tiramisu

Mix in 50ml of strong coffee (reduce the milk volume by 50ml in the base) and add 1 tbsp of cocoa powder to the base ingredients.

Apple Crumble

Stir in ½ tsp cinnamon to the base ingredients.

For the stewed apple topping: chop 1 apple and add it to a small pan with a splash of water and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Cook over medium heat for 8-10 minutes until tender, then stir in 1 tsp of maple syrup.

Method

For each flavor, combine the base ingredients with the additional flavorings, mix well, and let them refrigerate overnight (or for at least 4 hours). Before serving, top with yogurt or your preferred toppings.
