TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — This fall, the University of Alabama will lead the way among higher education institutions in the nation by introducing the UA AI Experience, a comprehensive initiative aimed at integrating artificial intelligence across its campus.
The new platform is designed as an interactive curriculum that empowers faculty, staff, and students to develop AI fluency, enabling them to:
- Gain expertise to engage meaningfully with emerging technologies.
- Identify appropriate contexts for utilizing AI.
- Formulate effective prompting strategies.
- Employ AI tools in an ethical and responsible manner.
- Safeguard data, privacy, and academic integrity.
- Develop essential skills for the future workforce.
While several universities in the U.S. provide AI training and resources for students, few extend this support to the entire campus community.
“The University of Alabama is establishing a national benchmark for equipping students, faculty, and staff with the tools to use AI responsibly and thoughtfully through the UA AI Experience,” stated Dr. Claire Major, faculty director at the UA Teaching Academy. “By uniting our community in a discerning approach to AI, we are fostering a shared language and clear expectations for appropriate usage, while helping to define what conscientious and principled AI engagement looks like in higher education.”
As AI applications proliferate in academic, research, and administrative settings, the University aims to create a solid, university-wide framework for effective, ethical, and future-ready interaction with these technologies.
“Artificial Intelligence is central to the evolution of our world. At The University of Alabama, we uniquely prepare our students for real-world challenges,” said Dr. Peter J. Mohler, president of The University of Alabama. “The UA AI Experience will serve as a springboard for faculty and staff to maintain ethical AI practices, preparing our students to be critical thinkers in an ever-changing global society.”
