What Is Keith Haring Day?
Keith Haring Day is a celebration that coincides with the birthday of renowned artist and activist Keith Haring, observed on May 4. The day aims to honor Haring’s legacy while promoting physical fitness in the community. The event will create an opportunity for attendees to learn about exercise leadership and engage in beneficial physical activities.
Highlighting the Keith Haring Fitness Court
The Keith Haring Fitness Court, dedicated in October 2022, is located at the intersection of Baldy Street and Normal Avenue on the Kutztown University campus. Developed in partnership with the Keith Haring Foundation, Outdoor Fitness Court, and the National Fitness Campaign, this outdoor facility features a comprehensive bodyweight circuit training system. Spanning 32 feet by 35 feet, it includes 30 body-weight fitness elements—seven full-body circuit training stations and a dedicated training wall—making it an ideal space for individuals of all fitness levels to get active.
This Fitness Court also pays tribute to one of the community’s own, as Haring was born and raised in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Despite achieving global fame, Haring remained deeply connected to his roots, proudly identifying as “Keith from Kutztown.” His legacy lives on through various art pieces throughout the borough, including the sculpture “Untitled (Figure Balancing on Dog)” which he gifted to Kutztown Park in the early ’90s. Additionally, a floor mural in the New Arts Program building on Main Street showcases his iconic style, preserved under layers of protective coatings.
Keith Haring: Artist and Advocate
Haring emerged as a transformative figure in the pop art movement during the 1980s, utilizing graffiti-inspired designs characterized by abstract lines and vibrant colors. His work transcended art, becoming a visual language known and celebrated worldwide. Haring was also a passionate activist, especially for the LGBTQ community, and founded the Keith Haring Foundation in 1989. The foundation provides funding for AIDS organizations and children’s programs while promoting awareness of Haring’s artistic contributions.
In a personal gesture of dedication, Haring created a drawing of the Nativity scene in 1984, which he gifted to St. John’s United Church of Christ—where he was baptized. His connection to the community is evident, as original art can still be found in local schools and historical venues, including the Kutztown Area Historical Society.
