Compete for Causes Launches Fitness App, Raises $21,000 for ConnectMed

Get Moving for a Cause: Compete for Causes Hosts Successful Fitness Challenge

In March, Compete for Causes, a local fitness fundraiser, successfully held its seventh fitness challenge, attracting 127 participants who collectively raised $21,000 for the nonprofit organization ConnectMed. This initiative not only promotes fitness but also fosters a sense of community and charitable giving.

Innovative Tracking with a New App

Thanks to a newly developed app by co-founder Andre Niemeyer, participants from 11 states were able to track their activities and meet personalized calorie-burning goals based on various factors like age, weight, and gender. As they accomplished these goals, funds were unlocked to support the charity’s mission.

Co-founder Jeff Szekeres noted the versatility of the app, stating, “It’s enjoyable because virtually any activity contributes to our calorie count.” Activities varied widely, including walking, playing pickleball, group fitness classes, and even ocean kayaking. One particularly adventurous participant in Vermont took to stand-up paddleboarding on a frozen lake to reach her daily target!

The Spirit of Friendly Competition

Founded in 2023 by friends from Carmel Valley and Solana Beach, Compete for Causes encourages individuals to be more active, engage in friendly competition, and contribute financially to worthwhile causes. Participants pay a buy-in fee and can increase their donations by capturing pledges from friends and family.

This recent event has boosted their total fundraising efforts to $215,000 since their inception, highlighting the effectiveness of their community-focused, virtual fitness model.

Community Support

This fitness challenge also received substantial backing from local corporate sponsors, including Body Fit Training Carmel Valley, Sweat Circuit Del Mar, Randolph Family Dental, and Timeli, a startup focused on personal safety devices.

The funds raised will greatly benefit ConnectMed, a nonprofit founded by Dr. Amanda Gosman. Juliet Torykian, who manages community relations for ConnectMed, expressed her gratitude, stating, “The partnership with Compete for Causes is invaluable. The funds will enhance our ongoing no-cost programs for children with complex medical needs and their families. We’re expanding our offerings to address increasing waitlists and providing more support through various events.”

Torykian also noted that many participants are volunteers, which not only strengthens the programs but reassures families that they are not alone in their challenges.
