Drawing from years of coaching in weightlifting and strength sports, Simon has witnessed firsthand how strength training can lead to remarkable physical and emotional transformations. His personal connection to Parkinson’s, stemming from his father’s battle with the disease, has further fueled his passion for creating supportive fitness opportunities for others. “That experience made me determined to create something meaningful for people in our community,” he shares.

Encouraged by a retired GP involved in SAW’s Age Well program and with backing from Parkinson’s UK, the Parkinson’s Strength Group was established. Despite starting small, the program quickly gained traction and is now a respected part of SAW’s offerings.

“I understand how challenging it can be for individuals with Parkinson’s and their families to find avenues for staying active,” Simon says. “When the opportunity arose to create this program at SAW, it felt like a natural progression. I envisioned a safe and welcoming space where participants could build strength, gain confidence in their movements, and connect with others who share similar challenges.”

Over the years, SAW has expanded its community wellness initiatives, catering to older adults, unpaid caregivers, and individuals living with conditions such as dementia and arthritis. The commitment to support people with Parkinson’s has become integral to SAW’s mission. The team has recently welcomed new community volunteers to enhance their outreach and training efforts.
