Work Attire Inspiration: Making the Pencil Skirt Less Intimidating

Happy Monday, bellas! Last week, I set out to find a fresh and affordable pencil skirt that was work-appropriate and easy to style. After browsing through various options in plaid, faux leather, and tweed, I ultimately decided to go with a classic: this $39 heather gray stretchy skirt from Express.

In my experience styling women of all shapes and sizes on my blog Penny Chic, I’ve realized that staple pieces need to have an impeccable fit above all. Today’s outfit perfectly demonstrates this principle.

Although the skirt appears simple, it features some thoughtful construction details. For starters, it’s machine-washable! When was the last time you could toss your work clothes in the washing machine? The front ruching minimizes the upper thigh and tummy area, and it’s made from a durable, two-ply stretch knit that feels far from flimsy.

Pairing this with a $9 men’s flannel from Walmart, along with a pearl necklace, creates a perfect feminine/masculine combo. The gray-on-gray look also brings in that trendy “matchy-matchy” vibe we’re excited about for spring.

To add a trendy pop, I chose these cobalt blue booties from ShoeDazzle.com for just $23. They are versatile enough to wear both in and out of the office.
