Joel Kim Booster’s Fasted Workout Diet: A Real-Life Look

You recently got married and have referred to your relationship as “a snack-based relationship.” Can you share how this idea came about?

Are you asking about the relationship itself or the snacking habits?

Let’s focus on the snacking.

Honestly, it mainly stems from my love for weed. Once 6 p.m. rolls around and I start smoking, it’s like everything changes for me. I have ADHD and take Adderall during the day, which allows me to fast until evening. But once I start smoking, maintaining that fast becomes quite a challenge.

Do you have any favorite snacks that you can’t live without?

I must say, although I’m not being sponsored, I frequently shop at Thrive Market. I try to keep healthier options around because I know I’ll be indulging in snacks. I gravitate toward items like fried chicken skin as a low-carb chip alternative, fruit leather instead of candy, and protein ice cream. This way, it feels like I’m indulging, but I’m actually making somewhat healthier choices.

It’s amusing that so many people remember me for my blended chicken phase from a while back. I think the last time I did that was before the pandemic. Back then, I was in a less stable financial situation, and it was a cost-effective way to consume a lot of food quickly, especially during my eating windows. I found it challenging to meet my calorie intake since I would often get full really fast. Blended meals became my efficient solution to get enough calories and protein.

People often ask why I didn’t just stick to protein shakes, and while I did try those, I always preferred to derive my protein from more natural sources. Eating real food is essential to me rather than relying solely on supplements. It was a practical way of managing my nutrition.

Now, my financial situation has improved significantly, and I’m fortunate enough that affordability isn’t as crucial when it comes to meals. Additionally, being in a relationship also makes me less rigid about my diet compared to before.

How does being in a relationship influence your dietary choices?

I still care about my appearance, but I feel a sense of security knowing that my partner will love me regardless of how I look. This gives me a bit more freedom in what I eat. While I still want to stay fit—both for my own sake and to remain attractive to my partner—there’s less pressure to maintain a strict routine for everyone else.

There’s something soothing about being in a committed relationship that lessens my anxieties about food and dieting, especially since it seems to matter less to him as well.
