A Renewed Focus on Fitness: Introducing the Presidential Fitness Test in Mississippi
In a move aimed at combating rising health concerns among youth, Governor Tate Reeves of Mississippi has signed Executive Order 1589, reinstating the Presidential Fitness Test for students across the state. This initiative follows President Donald J. Trump’s reestablishment of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, along with the Presidential Fitness Test itself.
“Today’s students are often glued to screens and consuming excessive amounts of processed foods,” stated Governor Reeves. “It’s crucial to tackle obesity and sedentary lifestyles that can lead to adverse health effects. To foster a healthier adult population, we must promote physical activity and educate our youth on making better dietary choices. Mississippi is committed to contributing to a healthier America.”
Executive Order 1589 mandates that State Health Officer Dr. Daniel Edney submit a report to Governor Reeves, detailing evidence-based approaches to enhance nutrition, diet, and exercise throughout the state. It also expects State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lance Evans to collaborate with federal health and education officials to outline a plan for integrating the Presidential Fitness Test. Both reports are to be delivered by June 30, 2026, with the official implementation of the fitness test scheduled for the 2026-2027 academic year.
