MN8, Google, and Eos Initiate Clean Energy Initiative in West Virginia

Joint Energy Project Announcement

MN8 Energy, Eos Energy Enterprises, and Google have initiated a collaborative project in West Virginia, aimed at enhancing clean energy resources for the PJM grid, addressing rising energy demands in the area.

Project Components:

  • Solar Energy: 86MW of utility-scale solar power.
  • Energy Storage:
    • 70MW/280MWh lithium-ion energy storage.
    • 10MW/100MWh of Eos’ zinc-based long-duration energy storage (LDES).

Operational Ownership:
MN8 will manage and operate the facility, which is designed to support local Google data centers.

Timeline:

  • Solar operations set to start in 2028.
  • Lithium-ion storage expected by 2029.
  • Long-duration storage anticipated in 2030.

Technological Innovation:
The Mammoth Solar project will utilize both short and long-duration storage, marking West Virginia’s first commercial deployment of LDES, which converts intermittent renewable energy into a reliable power source.

Economic Impact:
Google’s commitment to this project, as expressed by advanced energy technologies director, Lucia Tian, aims to not only meet data center needs but also foster economic growth in West Virginia.

Energy Purchase Agreement:
Google plans to buy energy and clean energy attributes from the project to enhance its operational grids.

Wider Goals:
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to commercialize LDES technologies while improving access to stable electricity amidst increasing renewable integration.

Eos Technology Deployment:
The project signifies Google’s first application of Eos’ Z3 zinc-based storage, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of energy delivery over extended periods.

Investment Estimate:
The entire project, located on a reclaimed coal mine, is projected to require a capital investment of around $350 million.
